Experience the Stage

There are many opportunities for South Side students to be involved in performances throughout the year, either within the Weekly Theatre Academy where each class will perform at least one full-scale production a year in a professional theatre, or as part of our Summer Holiday Academies! Our productions take place at several local venues including the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, the cornerHOUSE Arts Centre and the ACT Theatre Kingston, all with full lighting rigs, set and costumes!

From the very first workshop auditions, throughout the rehearsal process and into production week our young performers will work with our professional production team, who create a safe and fun rehearsal environment allowing them to thrive on stage. Whatever your your past experience, there is a place for you in our shows, with every production ensuring every student has their moment to shine, giving everyone a space to grow and develop with their talents.

A Note on Our Shows
Our aim at South Side is to ensure that every one of our young members is given the oppurtunity to have the full experience of the stage and an opportunity to shine throughout our shows! Cast sizes are therefore restricted and each show is tailored to a specific class!

Find out when each of our Weekly Theatre Academy classes will take to the stage and their upcoming productions below:

  • Am I able to have a free trial before booking a class?
For all our Weekly Academy classes we offer a free trial session which can be selected through our online booking form. This allows your son/daughter to try out the class before committing for the term. After your trial you will be sent an email for how to confirm your place for the remainder of term if you would like to continue! If you feel you still need another weeks trial please let us know and we will try to do our best to accommodate this. You can find out more information here.
  • When will my class do a production?
As part of our classes you will star in full-scale shows, performed for friends and family on a professional stage once a year. Classes perform a mixture of plays and musicals throughout the age groups with full costume, lights, set and a band. Our 7-11's, 11-15's and 15-18's shows currently take place at the cornerHOUSE in Surbiton and Esher Theatre. Alongside this every term, when not working towards a production, classes will culminate in an End of Term Performance for friends and family. Past productions have included Matilda JR, Legally Blonde JR, Brainstorm, Alice in Wonderland and Bugsy Malone!
  • What should we wear to class?
We want everyone to be able to express themselves freely and wear what they feel most comfortable. However, we do request that students wear appropriate clothing to move around in safely. This means please refrain from wearing shoes with wheels, flip flops or sandals. We have optional official South Side Theatre T-Shirts and hoodies available before and after every class and also available to order online.
  • What do I need to bring to class?
Apart from a labelled water bottle and your script if you're working on a show, just your wonderful self!
  • What are the costs for the Weekly Academy classes and how can I pay?
The costs of our classes vary depending on the length of the lesson. Our 7-18 year old's classes run at 1hr 30mins and cost £110 per term, and our 4-7 year old's classes run for an hour and cost £90 per term. We do also offer a number of subsidised places for all our classes and projects if cost is an issue. Please email us if you would like more details on this. To pay please visit our pay for your class page where you can set up a direct debit via GoCardless to pay termly.
  • Do I need to provide lunch and snacks for a holiday project?
Yes, all students will need to provide lunch, snacks and a water bottle please for each day of your holiday project. Due to allergies within groups and the church being a nut-free church we ask you to ensure no food containing nuts is packed in lunches. Students will also need to provide a refilable water bottle, which we can re-fill on site. For any specific allergies in the group, we will email these out. No food is provided from ourselves.
  • Do you offer sibling discounts?
Yes, we do! For every sibling you will receive £10 off your total class fees each term.
  • If we cannot make a class what should we do?
If you cannot make a South Side class for whatever reason please inform us via email so we can plan the sessions accordingly. We do recommend if possible attending every class as very often in classes we will be working towards a final performance.
  • What safety procedures are in place in classes with regards to COVID-19?
Following advice and guidelines from the Government and Public Health England we have an extensive COVID-19 Risk Assessment for all classes and projects to keep your son/daughter safe. You can find out our full measures on how we're keeping you safe by clicking here.
  • How much notice should I give should I decide to leave South Side?
Our notice period is 6 weeks prior to our first class of the new term. Once payment has been taken for a term we are unable to give a refund even if you give notice earlier than 6 weeks before the start of the next term. Please note if you are in rehearsals for a production, fees are due until the end of the production process, regardless of the 6 weeks notice period.
